Which types of cats are most commonly adopted? Contrary to a common misconception, black cats are actually quite popular among adopters. In a comprehensive study conducted across 14 regions of the United States, involving approximately 300,000 dogs and cats available for adoption, it was revealed that black cats constituted a significant portion of cat adoptions, accounting for 31 percent of all feline adoptions. In comparison, gray cats made up 20 percent of adoptions, while brown cats accounted for 18 percent. This data, collected in June 2017, sheds light on the preferences of cat adopters, highlighting the appeal of black cats in the adoption process.

The survey findings shed light on the primary demographics of individuals who were inclined to adopt pets during the pandemic. Specifically, Millennials emerged as the most active adopters, constituting a significant 43% of those who contributed to the surge in pet adoptions. Among Millennials, the primary motivation for adoption was often fulfilling the desires of their children or other family members who had longed for a pet companion. In contrast, 32% of individuals from Generation Z turned to pet adoption as a means to enhance their mental well-being. These insights, gathered on July 27, 2021, highlight the generational differences in pet adoption trends during the pandemic.

What happens to cats who don’t find adoptive homes can vary based on the type of shelter they are in and their age. In no-kill shelters, these cats will typically spend the remainder of their lives at the shelter, receiving care and attention from dedicated staff and volunteers. Alternatively, they may have the opportunity to be fostered in the homes of compassionate individuals who provide a temporary and loving environment.

However, the fate of cats in different shelters can be more dire. In shelters with limited space and resources, cats may face euthanasia when the shelter becomes overcrowded. Sadly, older cats are at a higher risk of being euthanized in these situations, as kittens tend to be more easily adopted due to their appeal to potential owners. This stark contrast in outcomes highlights the importance of adoption and support for older cats, as well as the critical need for responsible pet ownership and support for shelters striving to find homes for all cats in their care.
