Some backpackers do better with gels while others tolerate carbohydrate drinks; some can eat just about anything and power uphill. Experiment during your training to see which ones your stomach tolerates best.Ideally you should eat both before and after a hike. Eating complex carbs and lean meats or proteins before a hike helps fuel you for your adventure. While hiking, your body needs adequate fuel. The best place to get that is from food.

3. For a Hike or Day Trip…
  • Trail mix.
  • Nuts, seeds, nut-based bars or nut butter packs.
  • Fresh, whole fruit that doesn’t require refrigeration such as apples, bananas and oranges.
  • Dried or freeze-dried fruits and veggies.
